Illustrations for The Search for the Elves' Cure

I was asked by Sarah Hillyer, the Herbalist, to join her in an exciting adventure by illustrating her book, The Search for the Elves' Cure.  Neither of us had written or illustrated a book before, but whilst we sat in a Hayling Island Coffee shop it all seemed very exciting.  Within two years, we would be sat in another Hayling Island Coffee shop actually holding the first proof of the book which was even more exciting!

Sarah had written most of the book a few years before and had recently felt the nudge to continue on with her venture.  I loved the book immediately and already had creative ideas flowing for illustrations, so we sat together and shared ideas.

Medium

After researching and sketching ideas, each painting was sketched on 300g (140lb) 'not white' Bockingford water colour block to A5.  I then used Unipin fine line water and fade proof ink pen, sizes 02, 01 or 005 before using mainly Winsor and Newton professional watercolours.

Competition Quest

There is a competition for anyone who can correctly decipher the symbols in Chapter Ten's 'Facing Their Fears'.  All of which relate to the story and includes different alphabets, symbols and animal symbolism.  To enter please use the contact form listing all what you see and decipher.  Enjoy the mindful practice!

Back Page

You will notice that you never see Jack or Ruby's face illustrated.  We intended this to help the reader in using their imagination and to easier place themselves in their shoes during their quest.  There are naturally thirteen chapters which I love as there is some beautiful symbolism surrounding the Earth Goddess energies, and the number thirteen, and how we can honour, protect and nurture our beautiful, creative home.

I have added my Nix and Patrinia Oolana signature in every illustration, some are harder to see than others!  At the end of each chapter, there are some traditional and modern uses of the herbs mentioned, or a wellbeing tip.
